Senna (12A)

Sponsored by Clive Miller

Senna is a fantastically constructed documentary. It is viscerally exciting and there is no need to be an F1 fan to be gripped by the human story told in a way which pits Senna against Prost, conveys their rivalry terrifically and celebrates the human sprit.

Memento (15)

Sponsored by Claire Brewer Photography

How do you find the man who killed your wife, when you forget everything as soon as it has happened?

Chris Nolan stunned the world with the thought provoking blockbuster Inception and now it is time to look at his earlier film Memento, which is an equally thought provoking thriller based on the vagaries of the mind.

Le Quattro Volte (U)

Breathtakingly beautiful meditation on life, the universe and everything. Impossible to describe, impossible to forget...and surprisingly funny as well.

The Big Lebowski (15)

Sponsored by a Committee Member

The eminent and influential critic, David Thomson, hailed it as "a key work of late-twentieth-century culture..." - and it is brilliantly funny. The Big Sleep updated and relocated to 90’s LA, and turned into a tale of mistaken identity, kidnapping , nihilism... and bowling.

This must be Jeff Bridges' most endearing and enduring role.

After Life (PG)

"After Life" deserves to establish itself as an all time classic, but too few people have seen this wonderful film.

Haunting, but not in the sense of being sad, or heavy - it is both charming and funny, and you smile your way through it and it stays in the mind.

Young Adult (15)

Sponsored by Manuka Gardens

Wickedly funny satire on rom-com movies. Charlize Theron plays the boozy author of a generic young adult fiction series, who decides to go back to her home town and reclaim her lost love.

This is a darkly cynical, sharp and funny take on a female mid life crisis.

Skeletons (15)

A very British comedy, with a mismatched pair of travelling salesmen who are in the business of cleaning skeletons from closets.

Hailed a cult classic in the vein of Withnail & I, Skeletons was the Best New British Film at numerous awards.

Headhunters (15)

An elite headhunter subsidises his lifestyle by stealing paintings from his wealthy clients, but just when he thinks he has the ultimate prize, he finds it is his head that is being hunted.

This is a fantastically entertaining, action packed, blackly humorous thriller which has you on the edge of your seat with a grin.

Le Diner de Cons (15)

Francis Veber’s comedy "Le Placard" had people rolling in the aisles at our French Film screening with the Twinning Association. His film "Le Dîner de Cons" is even funnier.

This film has been made into the lamest of lame US remakes, so come and see the original.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (15)

Martha calls her sister out of the blue, having been silent for a couple of years, and asks her to pick her up from a hick town in the middle of nowhere. But where has she been and what has she been doing? She is not giving anything away, but her behaviour becomes more and more unsettling.

This is a superb film, which builds layer upon layer using memory driven flashbacks, revealing more and more and leading to an open ending that leaves you thinking.

It is a really thought provoking film shot in the foreboding Alaskan wilderness.

The Portuguese Nun (12A)

Mesmeric and beguiling, this is a wonderful film that centres on the story of a French actress who arrives in Lisbon to make a film. In some way ensnared by the sprit of the character she is playing, she wanders through Lisbon and the encounters she has with a range of enigmatic characters change her life.

A beautiful, intriguing and evocative film that will have you booking your flights for a Citybreak in Lisbon.

Carancho (15)

This ultra-smart, contemporary thriller grips like a vice from the opening shot.

An unlicensed lawyer, the Carancho (or Vulture) from the title, chases ambulances and prowls the hospitals of Buenos Aires looking for accident victims to use in insurance scams by sinister criminals.

Things change when he meets someone and wants out, but the crime bosses aren’t sympathetic.
